Compact Home Freeze Drying on a Standard Household Outlet
Preserve garden harvests, meats, prepared meals, fruits, vegetables, and more with the Blue Alpine Medium Select Freeze Dryer. Built in Idaho, this compact home freeze dryer combines five stainless steel trays with user-friendly software designed to make home food preservation easier to manage.
The Medium Select features five 9" × 13" trays and can accommodate up to 15 pounds of food per cycle, with Blue Alpine listing 10 pounds as a normal 24-hour cycle. It runs on a 120V, 15-amp circuit, so it doesn’t need the 20-amp setup Blue Alpine’s Large models require.
Built-in recipes provide a starting point for freeze-drying different foods, while customizable software gives you additional control over the process as you gain experience.
Current Estimated Ship Time

Electrical Requirements
The Blue Alpine Medium Select operates on 120V power and requires a 15-amp circuit, which Blue Alpine describes as a normal wall outlet. This sets it apart from Blue Alpine’s Large models, which require a 20-amp circuit and 20-amp receptacle.
Blue Alpine lists the Medium Select at a maximum power draw of 13 amps (1,560W) and an average power draw of 9 amps (1,080W).
Performance & Technology
The Blue Alpine Medium Select combines efficient freezing with intelligent controls designed to manage the freeze-drying process accurately.
A circulating fan inside the chamber helps blast-freeze food and promotes faster, more consistent freezing throughout the load. A higher-wattage heating pad on the bottom tray keeps that tray at the same temperature as the others.
Blue Alpine’s smart software uses PID control technology and solid-state relays to manage the freeze-drying process. Built-in recipes provide convenient starting points for different foods, and you can set the pressure limit for each recipe, which Blue Alpine says allows food to freeze dry faster.
A P100 filter inside the chamber helps protect the vacuum pump from particulates, while a solenoid in the vacuum pump prevents oil from flowing back into the chamber. Blue Alpine lists average freeze-drying cycles at 12–20 hours.
Built for Durability and Reliability
Blue Alpine builds its freeze dryers in Idaho with an extruded aluminum frame designed to provide a strong, durable structure.
The vacuum system uses barbed fittings rather than crimped fittings, which Blue Alpine says helps reduce potential points for vacuum leaks. Threaded connections are sealed using gasket material rather than Teflon tape, another design choice intended to help maintain a reliable vacuum seal.
The Medium Select uses R1270 natural refrigerant, and each machine goes through several hours of quality-control testing before it ships.
Choose Your Vacuum Pump
The Blue Alpine Medium Select can be configured with either the Premium Freeze Dryer Vacuum Pump or the upgraded Commercial Freeze Dryer Vacuum Pump, allowing you to choose the pump that best matches how you plan to use your freeze dryer.
For most home users, Blue Alpine recommends the Premium Vacuum Pump. The current Premium pump option for Blue Alpine freeze dryers features a dual-stage rotary-vane design with a brushless motor and an internal anti-backflow valve designed to prevent oil from flowing back into the system at the end of a cycle.
For frequent production or professional and small-business use, Blue Alpine offers the Commercial Vacuum Pump upgrade. Although its flow rate is lower, Blue Alpine explains that CFM primarily affects initial pump-down speed; the Commercial pump is designed to achieve a deeper ultimate vacuum, which is more important during the drying process.
The Commercial Vacuum Pump is rated to an ultimate vacuum of 15 microns and includes Blue Alpine’s Advanced 3-Stage Oil Mist Filter, designed to significantly reduce oil mist and the oily odor produced during vacuum-pump operation.
