Warmth Where Your Flock Needs It — Without the Heat Lamp
The Sweeter Heater Coop & Brooder Heater provides gentle radiant warmth for chicks and adult chickens without relying on a traditional 250-watt heat bulb. Available in four sizes and your choice of overhead or side mounting, it can be used in a brooder during chick season or positioned near the roost to give adult birds extra warmth during cold weather.
Unlike a traditional heat lamp that heats primarily through a high-temperature bulb, the Sweeter Heater uses a larger radiant heating surface with a maximum surface temperature below 185°F. Depending on size, it operates on just 32 to 150 watts, making it an energy-efficient option for providing targeted warmth to your flock.
The heater warms birds and other solid objects directly rather than trying to raise the temperature of the entire surrounding space. That makes placement important: chicks can gather beneath an overhead-mounted heater, while a side-mounted unit can provide radiant warmth near your flock's winter roost.
Designed, sourced and assembled in the USA, the Sweeter Heater is backed by a three-year manufacturer's warranty.
Trusted for Cold-Weather Flocks
The Sweeter Heater isn't just designed for backyard brooders and coops—it has also found a home with some very well-known flocks. Martha Stewart uses Sweeter Heaters for the chickens on her farm in Bedford, New York, including as part of her winter coop preparation.
For backyard chicken keepers looking for a proven way to provide targeted warmth without relying on traditional heat lamps, that's a pretty compelling vote of confidence.
Why Choose the Sweeter Heater?
- A safer alternative to traditional heat lamps — The heating surface stays below 185°F, compared with temperatures above 430°F for a traditional infrared heat bulb.
- Energy efficient — Uses 32–150 watts depending on size, compared with 250 watts for a traditional heat bulb.
- Use from chick to adult — Suitable for brooding chicks as well as providing targeted winter warmth for adult chickens.
- Four sizes available — Choose the heating area and wattage that best fit your flock and setup.
- Two mounting options — Choose an overhead model for suspended brooder heating or a side-mount model for wall or ceiling installation.
- No bright light — Provides radiant heat without keeping the brooder illuminated day and night.
- Easy to clean — The sealed plastic upper shell can be wiped or sprayed clean.
- Made in the USA — Designed, sourced and assembled in the United States.
- Three-year warranty — Covered against defects in materials and workmanship.
Choose Your Size
| Size | Wattage | Weight | Maximum Chick Capacity* |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11" × 11" | 32 watts | 2 lbs | 22–25 chicks |
| 11" × 16" | 50 watts | 4 lbs | 32–35 chicks |
| 11" × 30" | 100 watts | 6 lbs | 60–65 chicks |
| 11" × 40" | 150 watts | 8 lbs | 80–85 chicks |
*Maximum chick capacities are based on a draft-free brooder at approximately 70°F ambient temperature with the heater positioned approximately 4.5–5 inches above the floor. Colder temperatures, drafts and greater mounting height can reduce the number of chicks a heater can effectively warm. When choosing between sizes, consider sizing up for colder or more challenging environments.
Overhead or Side Mount?
Overhead Mount
The overhead model is designed to hang above the birds, making it a practical choice for brooding chicks. It can also work well in colder brooding locations such as barns, garages, porches, basements and other outbuildings.
The 11" × 11" and 11" × 16" overhead models include one 20-inch chain and three S-hooks. The 11" × 30" and 11" × 40" models include two 20-inch chains and three S-hooks.
Side Mount
The side-mount model is designed to install flush against a wall or ceiling and includes mounting brackets and screws. For winter coop use, position the heater relatively close to the area where your flock roosts so the birds can benefit from the radiant heat.
How the Sweeter Heater Works
The Sweeter Heater provides radiant heat. Rather than significantly warming the surrounding air, its heat passes through the air and is absorbed by solid objects—including your birds—directly beneath or in front of the heating surface.
That means you shouldn't judge its performance simply by placing a thermometer in the air beneath it. Instead, proper placement and your birds' behavior are better indicators of whether they're receiving the warmth they need.
For chicks, begin with the heater approximately six inches above the brooder floor and observe their behavior. If chicks avoid the heated area, raise the heater. If they crowd tightly underneath it and chirp loudly, lower it as appropriate while maintaining the required safety clearance.
Brooder & Winter Coop Use
The Sweeter Heater can serve two different roles throughout the year.
During brooding season, an overhead-mounted heater creates a warm area where chicks can gather when they need heat and move away when they don't.
During cold weather, it can provide targeted supplemental warmth for adult chickens when positioned near their roosting area. It is not designed to heat the entire volume of a large coop or shed. The goal is to provide radiant warmth where your birds actually spend their time.
Installation & Safety
Before introducing chicks, run the Sweeter Heater for several hours to allow any initial "new plastic" odor to dissipate.
For safe operation:
- Keep the heating surface open to the air so heat can escape and circulate properly.
- Maintain at least 6 inches of clearance between the heating surface and bedding, straw, hay or other combustible materials.
- Secure the heater so it cannot fall into a position where the heating surface becomes enclosed.
- Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions for your selected mounting style.
Care & Cleaning
The sealed plastic shell on top of the Sweeter Heater is designed for easy cleanup. If dust, debris or the inevitable chicken mess accumulates on the unit, the exterior can be sprayed or wiped clean as appropriate.
Always disconnect electrical equipment from power before cleaning and follow the manufacturer's care instructions.
